The capital of Hungary is one of the most amazing cities in all of Europe and it has practically everything: a lot of majestic monuments, a rich and interesting history, a gastronomy that coaxes any palate and a few bars and fun places to spend the night. If you are planning a trip here you are in luck: in this post we will give you a few tips for traveling to Budapest (and not screw it up).

If you want more information, visit our GUIDE TO A TRIP TO BUDAPEST

When to go to Budapest? We went twice. The first was in March: we found cold and snow. The second in October and we liked it a lot more hehe. Although we are clear, the best time to visit Budapest is at the end of spring or at the end of summer, when the weather is good and there are not so many tourists. In particular, May and September we believe that they have to be the best months to travel to Budapest.

How many days do you need to get to know Budapest? Obviously, the more time is available much better. But 2 days would be the minimum, one to thoroughly explore Buddha and another to dedicate it to Pest.

In this post we tell you all the things you can see and do in Budapest. Study it well and prepare a visit planning: the city is quite extensive and you have to organize your days with a certain sense or you will end up going from one place to another like chicken without a head. And that is also a good time to take a look in case you find cheap trips to Budapest. Luck!

Where to stay in Budapest? For us the best area is that of the Jewish quarter: it is quite central, full of locals and ruin pubs and is quiet. Here you have cheap options to stay in Budapest.

Note that The official currency of Hungary is the Hungarian Forint (HUF). We do not recommend changing the money before, but directly take out what you need at the ATMs in Budapest. The best thing for this is to have a card that does not charge commissions, we use the Bnext card, which we complement with the N26 card, to increase the limits. Both are free and are the best option for travel. But if you prefer to exchange euros for florins, try not to do it at the airport: exchange houses in cities usually give better exchange rates than those at airports.

How to get to the city from the airport? In this post we have told you the different options to do this tour. We anticipate that we would use the 100E bus (€ 3).

If you don't want to risk leaving the city with a fine as a souvenir, make sure ring the tickets on buses and subway well. Here they explain perfectly how to do it.

If you are going to use the public transport on more than one occasion, you may be compensated to buy some type of transport pass. The newspaper with unlimited transport costs 1,650 HUF (about € 5), and the 10-trip pass costs 3,000 HUF (about € 10). More information about fares and passes.

Is the Budapest card worth it? We did not buy it since we made some calculations and it did not come to mind, but if you are one of those who want to enter the main attractions and museums of a city, it may compensate you. The 1-day costs € 22, the 2-day costs € 33, you can buy it here. The Budapest Card includes:

  • Unlimited transport
  • Entrance to the Lukács spa
  • Downtown Tour
  • Zugliget cable car
  • Budapest History Museum, Hungarian National Gallery, Vasarely Museum ... and much more.

The best way to break the ice with the city is to sign up for a free tour in Spanish. This lasts a couple of hours and takes you to know the main areas of the center of Budapest.

One of the things we always recommend doing in Budapest is to end the day having a beer in their ruin pubs, bars that adapted buildings in ruins to become super curious places. Here we tell you which are the best ruinpubs in Budapest.

The Hungarian gastronomy It is very tasty and tasty, but you have to know where to go to enjoy it completely. For this we have written a post with a few restaurants to eat in Budapest (good and cheap).

Reserve the entrance to parliament online on this page. The best thing is that for about € 10 you include admission and a guided tour in Spanish (or in the language you want). For non-residents in Europe, the price is double (go ...).

In Budapest it is very typical to go somewhere Spa. The city is full of these places where you can relax with its hot springs, maybe too many! Come on, we give you a hand to choose one, in this article we tell you which are the best spas in Budapest. One tip: book your ticket online and save time!

The best sunset in Budapest it is enjoyed from the Fisherman's Bastion. If you are one of those who love taking pictures of cities and sunsets, you will be delighted. It is also one of the most beautiful places in Budapest.

If you are a festive without remedy, that you know that in August in Budapest one of the best electronic music festivals in Europe takes place: the Sziget Music Festival. We didn't go but we followed Aniko's trip and we left her chronicle.

One of the things that everyone recommends doing in Budapest (including us) is a cruise on the Danube. There are all kinds and different prices: luxury, with dinner and live music; and more informal, with open bar of drink and pizza hehe.

But if you go with a backpacking budget, know that there is a very cheap option: take a public boat (line D-11, D-12 and D-13) worth about € 2.5! It's free if you have the Budapest Card. More info about boat schedules and tours.

In the event that you have enough time, the ideal is to do some other day trip from Budapest. Two good options are the tour to Esztergom, Visegrád and Szentendre (3 of the most beautiful cities on the Danube) and the tour to discover Vienna, the capital of Austria.

Although our advice, if you have at least 7 days of time, is combine the trip to Budapest with visits from Prague, Vienna and Bratislava. Here we tell you a few tips to carry out this trip.

If you are one of those curious who always look for peculiar and original data of the cities, in this post we tell you a few curiosities about Budapest and Hungary.
