Prague, from the first moment we stepped on its cobbled streets, we found it one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. So whenever someone asks us for a perfect getaway at a good price, we have no doubt: the capital of the Czech Republic is the place! As we know that when organizing a travel for free A thousand and one questions arise, in this post we are going to give you a few tips for traveling to Prague (and not screw it up).

What is the best time to travel to Prague? It is a city with a fairly cold climate, so try to visit it in the central months of the year (from April to September). We also went in October and we thought it was a bad month.

Although if you don't mind being cold, a spectacular time to travel to Prague, it has to be during Christmas: We saw photos and the city is even more beautiful, full of lights and street markets.

The local currency is the Czech krona (CZK). The change, as of January 2019, is of € 1 = 25 CZK.

How to change money? The ideal option is to get a special card that does not charge commissions for taking money or paying abroad. We, after analyzing it well, always carry the bnext card, which we complement with the N26 card. It is advisable to carry several cards in case of any failure, and these are free and complement each other perfectly. with which they do not charge you commission to take abroad. If you don't have it or don't want to take it out, avoid changing money at the airport and look for exchange houses or banks in the city. You know, compare several and decide on the one that offers the best exchange rate. It is also not interesting to change in your bank before going on a trip, as well as take out money with a normal card. For the latter, you can check your card contract or ask the bank for commissions to be taken abroad and the exchange rate they apply.

The Czech Republic is part, as you well know, of the European Union So to enter, if you are Spanish, you will not need anything more than your ID (or passport). Come on, you don't need a visa or anything. Also the roaming was removed Some time ago, so you can use your Spain data rate as if you were at home (beware, calls to Czech numbers are not included!).

How many days are needed to get to know Prague? We believe that 2 days are the minimum, but if you have more time, great! You can use the extra days to make a nearby excursion or even to know other European capitals ... (At the end of the post we talked about this).

How to get to Prague from the airport? There are two options:

  • Easy and cheap option: take some of the urban buses. Bus 119 arrives at Nádraží Veleslavín, where you can change to metro line A. The 100 reaches Zliçín, with connection to the metro line B. It depends on where your accommodation is worth one or the other. The ticket costs less than € 1 and you can buy it at the same airport.
  • The expensive option but certainly more comfortable: private transfer from the airport to the hotel. It costs about € 10 per person, here is more information. There is also the option of Uber, which costs around € 15.

A good way to break the ice with the city is sign up for a free tour (It's free but leave a tip, don't be a rascal). You will tour the neighborhoods of Mala Strana and the Old City with an expert guide. You can book it here.

And of course plan your trip With our post of 30 things to see and do in Prague: we think it is very complete and tells you the essential places to visit in the city.

Analyze if you compensates to buy the Prague Card. It costs € 58 and includes free admission to the main attractions, tourist bus and free public transport. You can buy it here. These types of cards are usually interesting for those who plan to enter many places of payment. In the end if you calculate, it will be more expensive to pay for each of the tickets than with the tourist card, in addition to including public transport.

Where to stay in Prague? Obviously it is best to stay in the Historic Center (Staré Město), when you are closer to the Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí) better. Here we tell you what are the best areas to stay in Prague and we recommend some hotels.

If, like us, you enjoy exploring the gastronomy of a place, Prague you will love: here you eat well and cheaply. In this post we recommend 8 restaurants to eat in Prague.

Do I have to tip? It has become a custom for locals to tip some restaurants. Normally it is usually 10-15%, although you can always round to the nearest exact figure.

And the best thing is that the beer is thrown out of price! There is even a tour that takes you to visit the most famous breweries (and of course it will make you try a few types of this “liquid gold”). It costs € 17 and includes guide and tasting of 3 beers. More information and reservation.

Do not leave the visit of Jewish quarter for a Saturday: this day, for the Jews, corresponds to our Sunday and everything will be closed.

The best thing to know about Prague is walk, so wear comfortable shoes! However, you may want to take the bus or subway to reach more remote areas. The means of transport in Prague are cheap and there is a daily pass that for 100 CZK (about € 4.3) includes unlimited travel. More information.
