WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN COLOMBO, THE CAPITAL OF SRI LANKA

The capital of Sri Lanka is by far the most inspiring city in the world. Nor from Asia. Ni from Sri Lanka. Worse, it's not even a little inspiring, things as they are. Or at least for us;). The truth is that both times we visited, there was no good feeling, a matter of taste, I guess. But you always have to look for positive sides and of course there are several things to see and do in Colombo. Then we tell you 😉 (yes, our advice is serious: do not spend more than one day in this chaotic city).

Going through Colombo without stepping on the Pettah area is not having been in the capital of Sri Lanka. This neighborhood is full of beach bars, chaos, street vendors, shops, chaos, makeshift markets, chaos, buses, tuktuks, fruit stands, chaos ... train and bus stations are here so many travelers have to try the 'Pettah -experience ', one of the craziest and most authentic in Sri Lanka. And is that Colombo ... is a great quilombo!

If you want you can sign up for this tour to discover the city by a guide who will tell you everything you need to know about the capital of Sri Lanka. (There is also a tour option in Spanish).

That is what they told us ... and what we will do: the last 3 days of this trip we will spend there. At the moment we can only say that we are waiting for beach bars, waves, sun and palm trees, although they are only assumptions, we will see how reality is (hundreds of Chinese grouped in luxury hotels? Backpackers staying in cabins? Russians taking Cocktails in infinity-pools? -Please don't! -)

From this grassy esplanade facing the sea you can enjoy the best sunset of Colombo (the sunsets in the western part of Sri Lanka are simply spectacular) and if you do it accompanied by a good and cheap ice cream ... better than better. This is where couples, friends, families gather to relax after a day of work ... the truth is that the atmosphere is cool.

If something is not missing in Sri Lanka they are Buddhist temples and Colombo was not going to be the exception: this temple is very beautiful and deserves a visit. The most curious is the set of architectural styles used (mix of Indian, Thai and even Chinese influence) and the amount of relics and objects that accumulate in the complex, although we do not fool ourselves: what most falls in love with Western eyes is the row of seated Buddhas. Another attraction is the great sacred tree, where it is said that Buddha was meditating ...

Entrance to the temple costs Rs 200 (€ 1.3).

Fort is the district where all (or almost all) government buildings are gathered ... the architecture is pretty (heritage of the colonial period) but come on, if you don't have time ... you won't miss anything from the other world either :-p

Maybe we are not being very fair with Colombo, the truth is that we did not want to give him a lot of opportunity to 'fall in love' but hey ... ours would not work, we do not know why but it is so. And you? Have you visited the capital of Sri Lanka? Did you like it?

If from Colombo you plan to travel south, first take a tour to see two of the great wonders of Sri Lanka: Sigiriya and the Dambulla Caves. Our advice is that you spend about 3-4 days to get to know the area (not too far away are also Anuradaphura and Pollonaruwa) but if you don't have time, a 1-day tour is recommended!

Useful information

:: Where to sleep in Colombo?

We did it at the Clock Inn, in the Colombo 03 district, a street from the sea.

:: How to get to Colombo from the airport?

The fastest way is to take the bus. You have to exit through the door on the left and continue until you leave the airport grounds. Across the road is the bus stop that leads to Colombo. The price of the bus is Rs 110 and it takes about 45 minutes to reach Pettah station. From there you can take a tuctuc to your final destination.
