NAVIGATING TO THE SOUTH

"Land in sight!"

We already saw the green cliffs of the south island in front of us from the ferry.

After almost 5 months touring the north island, the least favorite of backpackers, and with 5,000 kiwikymeters in our Tapotupotu (that's how we baptized the van, although I'm rethinking calling it Alien ...), we are presented with a new adventure ... The south island is coming!

"You're going to freak out" that we met with each person who was in reference to the south island.

We do not see a better way to start discovering this island than imitating some of the ancient explorers, why not the same Thomas Cook, or imagining ourselves in a maori canoe furrowing the ocean currents.

Although the ferry is somewhat more comfortable, it is true. But the landscapes are not very different from those found in their travels ... a maze of blue waters between cliffs and lush hills.

We embark on the wellington harbor and in a couple of hours we were on the other side of the strait crossing the fjords that would take us to the Picton port in one more hour.

However there was something that did not let us fully enjoy our ferry ride ... a doubt that hammered our heads at all times ... "Lety, have I put the handbrake?". When we got back to the car, which was waiting for us on the lower level of the ferry we got out of doubt ... yes, I put it.

Ferry to cross from the North Island to the South Island of New Zealand.

We did it with the company Bluebridge. The ferry is fine, almost a cruise. There are movie theaters, cafeteria, work areas, Wi-Fi… you can also go outside to see the landscapes.

If you travel in high season, it is best to book at least 3 days in advance. In low season there is usually no problem to buy it the same day.

  • Web: www.bluebridge.co.nz
