One of the essential procedures to be able to work in New Zealand is to have the IRD number, something like a tax or social security identification number. They will request it in all the works to register you and it will be the database of your quotes, to then claim the refund of fees.
But, how to get the IRD in New Zealand? It is not difficult, you'll see:

First, they will ask you for two types of documents: Type A: passport. Type B: international driving license.

Eye, ask for a document that proves your address (proof addres document) in the hostel where you are, you may be asked for it in this procedure and you will need it to open a bank account.

For the first one, there is no problem (if you have entered New Zealand without a passport you are the fucking master). The thing is complicated for B. If you have a driver's license you should get your international license, but ...

Just go to a traffic office (look online if you need an appointment), fill out a form including a passport photo, pay 10 euros and at the moment they give it to you! It is valid for one year.

Back to the topic, If you have document A and B, you can go directly to a Post Shop (with red signs) and deliver the following documentation:

  • Form that they deliver to you (sooo simple).
  • Photocopy of passport (only from the first page) and original.
  • Fotocopy of the international driving license (first page and the page in English with the last tab of the photo) and original.

This would be enough, you deliver it and within two weeks a letter arrives at the address you entered with your IRD number.

No worries, there are two ways to fix it:

  • First and most complicated: take out the “New Zealanda 18+ card”A card that proves that you are over 18 years old. To do this you fill out the form for that purpose that they deliver to you in a Post Shop, you take it to a police station or to a justice of the peace (in the central library of Auckland there is one) to be signed as an “authorized signature” (no We know well if they ask a lot or nothing ...). You deliver it to the Post Shop, you pay the $ 25 it costs and wait for the card to arrive (approximately one week). With this card and your passport you can now request the IRD number as explained above.
  • Second and much faster. Catch one of the many buses that carry up Takapuna, where the IRD office is located, strictly on Bayon Ave (next to The Spencer hotel). The bus will leave you on Burns Ave, 7 (see on google maps how to go by public transport from the point where you are here).

We took the bus at Albert St and it cost us $ 3.20 one way. You show up without an appointment or anything, go to the information desk and deliver the following:

  • Form that they give you (very simple).
  • Photocopy of passport (first page only) and original.
  • Identity document of your country or some document that accredits you (Lety showed him the health card and they accepted).
  • Document proving your address.

Within two weeks a letter arrives at the address you entered with your IRD number. In 5 minutes process resolved. Just take the bus back in front of where it left you and on the way to Auclankd!
