The icon of the city is the Golden Gate red bridge, a visit that you can not miss, but you can not forget the visit to Alcatraz, the Fisherman's Wharf pier, the historic trams, the neighborhoods like Castro, or its spectacular viewpoints, among others many things.
If you have more time you can also do some excursion outside the city such as visiting the famous Yosemite National Park, the Napa and Sonoma valleys, with its famous wine cellars, the giant sequoia trees of Muir Woods or some of the many villages with West Coast charm.
All these excursions in San Francisco can be done by renting a car, you have to keep in mind that there cars are with automatic transmission, or with day trips from San Francisco.

The metro and the bus will allow you to visit all the tourist places of the city, in addition to that it is also almost mandatory to get on one of its old trams.
The city has several viewpoints, we recommend the Twin Peaks, with incredible panoramic views of the entire city and the viewpoints that are going up to Marin Headlands Park, with beautiful views of the Golden Gate and San Francisco in the background.
In San Francisco, in addition to crossing the Golden Gate on foot or by bike, you can see the famous Painted Ladies Victorian houses, the Fisherman's Wharf harbor area with its sea lions, the Chinatown and Castro neighborhoods, relax in Golden Gate Park or just stroll through its streets and charming corners.

2. Excursion to Yosemite, one of the best excursions in San Francisco

At our route through the National Parks of the Western United States We had marked in red the visit to Yosemite National Park, one of its most emblematic parks.
Yosemite is formed by a spectacular valley surrounded by large granite mountains, El Capitan being the best known. This valley is a paradise for climbers and hiking enthusiasts in which the most famous places, in addition to the Captain, are the forest of giant sequoia trees, the rocky promontory of Half Dome and its waterfalls such as the Bridalveil jump or the jump of the Veil of the bride.
The park has several viewpoints such as the Tunnel View or Glacier Point from where you can appreciate the entire valley and its wonderful nature. Definitely visiting Yosemite is one of the best excursions in San Francisco.
The park is located about 300 kilometers from San Francisco, about 4 hours by road and you can go by rental car or in a bus tour from San Francisco.

4. Excursion to Muir Woods and Sausalito

Half a hour's drive from San Francisco is Muir Woods National Parks, famous for its forest of huge redwoods. These trees that can reach 150 meters high and be over 1000 years old are one of the wonders that you can enjoy in some parks in the Western United States. In our case we saw them in the Sequoia National Park and it was one of the most unforgettable moments of the trip.
But if you do not have a car and want to visit them more comfortably, in the Muir Woods forest you can make several marked hiking trails between redwoods.
The only problem is that it is very difficult to access by public transport, so it is advisable to rent a car or take a bus tour. On the Muir Woods excursion you will also pass through the beautiful town of Sausalito, located on the shore of San Francisco Bay, a town that is full of charm with its shops, cafes and art galleries.
