Well of San Luis in the mining Ecomuseum Valle de Samuño in Asturias

The transformation that is undergoing Nalón Valley in Asturias, and in particular Langreo and its surroundings, implies the recovery of old industrial facilities to become tourist attractions.

In this line, just over two years ago I had the opportunity to meet the then project of the Samuño Valley Mining Ecomuseum, near Langreo, which since the end of June of this year 2013 can already be visited.

The Samuño Valley comes to join other existing museums in which the cultural aspects of the historical mining and steel activity of this Asturian region are preserved, such as the Musi and the Mumi.

Specifically, theSamuño Mining Ecomuseum recover the old industrial heritage San Luis Well, located in the town of The new one.

Bocamina La Trechora in the Samuño Valley in Asturias

This well was built in 1930 by the company Coals of the New to exploit a coal mine, and in 1968 it was bought by Hunosa, company that closed it because in the vicinity it had its own well, the so-called Samuño Well, to access coal mines.

But, what can you see during your visit of Samuño Ecomuseum?

He Samuño Mining Ecomuseum, whose location I could visit during a trip to Asturias, offers two different attractions to visitors.

Building of the San Luis Well of the future Samuño Mining Ecomuseum in Asturias

Two kilometers down the valley, you start the visit at Cadavíu station, going up to the emulation of a 19th century mining train, which runs through the Samuño Valley the old railroad path of Coals of the New. On this tour you pass through old mines (entrances to coal mines), such as Trechora.

The train ends up entering through a real mining tunnel, and after traveling 980 meters longitur, you arrive at the first floor of the San Luis Well, 30 meters below the surface. Then, you will climb to the surface in the mining cage of the castillete tower, just as the miners who operated this coal mine did.

Already on the surface you can visit the historic building of the Machine room, as well as other old facilities San Luis Well, like the workshops, the lamp shop or the canteen.

Finally, you will return on the mining train to the starting point of the visit, completing an excursion that lasts about two hours.

He Mining Ecomuseum of the Samuño Valley, saving distances, reminds me of other tourist visits you can do in Central Europe, such as salt mines near Salzburg, in Austria, in which the small train in which it is accessed inside becomes a great attraction of your visit.

Waves Wieliczka salt mines from Krakow, in Poland, where it is the slides that unite different levels of galleries that arouse greater enthusiasm among visitors.

The visiting hours of the Samuño Mining Ecomuseum they are, from May 1 to September 15, from 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. From May 1 to June 14, it opens every weekend and holidays, and from June 15 to September 15, every day, except Tuesdays.

Here you can check all schedules and prices of the Samuño mining Ecomuseum, including train departure times.

In sum, this new ecomuseum is another exponent in the process of recovering the industrial cultural heritage in the Asturian Nalón Valley.
